Did you know…Charleston Tea Plantation
Did you know the only tea garden in America is right here in Charleston, SC. The Charleston Tea Plantation located on Wadmalaw Island, was originally opened as a research facility in 1960 by Thomas J. Lipton Company. In 1987 Mack Fleming, a tea horticulturist and William B. Hall an expert tea taster purchased the farm from Lipton to establish the 127 acre Charleston Tea Plantation. In 2003 the plantation was purchased by R.C. Bigelow, Inc. The Charleston Tea Plantation produces “American Classic Tea”, a high-quality black tea which you can find on the shelves of your local supermarket. On Saturday, May 17, the First Flush Festival will take place to celebrate the arrival of the 2008 tea crop. It will be an entire day of games, food, and live music. Attendees will have the opportunity to buy Charleston Tea Plantation’s 2008 First Flush Loose Tea. If you can’t make it to the festival, the Charleston Tea Plantation is open to the public, Wednesday through Saturday: 10am to 4pm and Sunday, 12pm to 4pm. It’s no wonder that tea is considered the hospitality drink of the South!
