SPOLETO IS HERE!
It’s that time of year in Charleston for the Spoleto Festival which brings the arts to the people of Charleston and their visitors. The Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) was founded by Gian-Carlo Menotti (winner of two Pulitzer Prizes) in 1958. Gian-Carlo chose the small town of Spoleto, Italy as the venue for the festival because of its two indoor theatres, a Roman theatre and many other spaces. The purpose of the festival was to provide a forum for young American artists. It is an important cultural event, held annually in late June-early July. In 1977 Mr. Menotti founded the festival that takes place here in Charleston for 17 days. He chose the city for its similar charm to the town of Spoleto as well as the many theatres and performing spaces available. For those not familiar with the festival, it offers more than 100 performances from artists around the world that include opera, theatre, music, music theatre, jazz and much more. Thanks for the information Jacquie. I attended some Spoleto events a few years ago and they were fantastic! I encourage anyone who has never experienced Spoleto to do so. Whether you live in or around the Charleston area or just visiting, Spoleto offers many artistic and musical venues to enjoy.
