The Charleston Green Fair, Sunday, September 28, 2008
Going Green seems to be a term that we hear a lot of but what does it really mean to us as individuals and how can each one of us do small things that make a big difference. Even if you can’t afford in these difficult economic times to purchase a hybrid car, there are things that you do in your everyday life that you do have control over and can change. For instance, when I was reading up on Going Green, I learned that recycling glass can save oil. For every ton of crushed glass that is recycled saves about 30 gallons of oil. Think of all your bottles and other glass items in your home that you throw away without recycling. If everyone did just a little bit, we would save a lot. Recycling paper is another way can help the environment. Although for years now, many of us have already been practicing this either at home or at our place of business – recycle bins are everywhere in my office, I never really knew the statistics on how many trees we cut down or how long it takes for the tree to grow to become of age to be used for paper. The United States cuts down more than 4 billion trees a year to make paper products. A tree has to grow for 25 years before it is ready to be cut down to make paper. I found this information on Geocities where you can find more information on Going Green as well as at Treehugger .
