Outdoor October Events in Charleston
It’s official. Fall has come to the Lowcountry. Even though the weather may not agree, you can always count on it changing very soon. So many events are planned for October, it will amaze you. There are some great outdoor events that are suitable for families and are also fun if you have out of town visitors and want to show them some of the beautiful homes and gardens of Charleston.
Paddlefest is scheduled at the Old Santee Canal Park on the 4th. Bring the family and enjoy canoeing and kayaking throughout the park.
The Preservation Society is showing off the Holy City in its 32nd Annual Fall Tour of Houses and Gardens, Thurs.-Sun. in October. Each day will see a different street highlighted.
Area decorative artists and craftsmen will show one of a kind designs at the Charleston Home Market at 10 Storehouse Row at The Navy Yard at Noisette on the 23rd-25th. Think of it like a homegrown High Point Market. Kicking off the event will be the Upper King Street Walk held in the Design District on the 23rd.

The Charleston Museum has opened a new exhibit, Brilliant! Ancient to Modern Lighting. This first installment will cover the ancient to 19th century time line.

The same weekend Seabrook Island is the scene of the Lowcountry Bounty Festival with lots of family activities. The 19th is a big day for picnics. The Chas. Museum hosts its Annual Family Picnic at the Dill Sanctuary on James Island; The Mount Pleasant Children’s Day will take place at the Park West Recreational Center. Also on the 19th, the Red Ribbon Fest will celebrate drug free families with lots of fun at the Old Santee Canal Park.
There’s something about a full moon, so enjoy it from the deck of the Schooner Pride on the 14th or if you’re an experienced climber, attack the Wall by moonlight at James Island County Park on the 15th. Ever wonder what goes on in the swamp after dark? Find out for yourself at the Beidler Forest Audubon Center Nightwalk on the 11th.
Spend a Sunday afternoon on a self-guided walking and driving tour through unique West Ashley and James Island gardens at the Charleston Horticultural Society’s Gardens for Gardeners celebration on the 5th.The Charleston Garden Festival at Middleton Place, held on the 17th-19th, is themed “Metamorphosis.” Speakers, competitions and panel discussions will be held. There’s a new competition series this year and a call for entries has been given. The four divisions will showcase the genius of photographers, gardeners, designers and horticulturists of all skill levels.
If flower shows are your passion, don’t miss the Exchange Club Fair the end of the month. In addition to the rides and fair food, local garden clubs host amazing floral competitions. On the 18th, Magnolia Horticultural Series, “Autumn on the Ashley” will continue at Drayton Hall.
