DID YOU KNOW…

Did you know…Currently the Dock Street Theatre is undergoing renovations and is expected to reopen in 2010. The Dock Street Theatre is one of Charleston’s buildings that is chock full of history. The first building constructed in America in 1736, for theatrical use, had a short life of four years until it burnt down in a fire in 1740. Rebuilt in 1809 and opened as the Planter’s Hotel, it wasn’t until 1930s that it was remodeled with a stage and auditorium to reopen in 1937 as the Dock Street Theatre. Since then, the tourists and residents of Charleston have been enjoying many a production. It’s even been written by Ed Macy and Julian Buxton in their book “The Ghosts of Charleston” that the 2nd floor is haunted by a woman dressed in clothing of the 1830s.
