An exciting time in Charleston for the arts – is when Spoleto is here. Every year we can count on looking forward being entertained by wonderfully talented artists in theater, dance, opera, visual arts & jazz.

Initially the festival started in the acient city of Spoleto, Italy in the provence of Perugia founded by Gian Carlo Minotti. Named Festival dei Due Mondi which means Festival of Two Worlds, the intentionwas to have the worlds of American and European culture facing each other in his event; this concept would then be strengthened by the fact that it was held in conjunction with its “twin”, the Spoleto USA Festival.

I have been fortunate enough to attend a concert by Frank Emilio Flynn, a Cuban jazz piano player as well as a production of Mamba’s Daughters, at the Dock Street Theater. Both performances were outstanding.

If you are interested in attending any of these events, you can to www.spoletousa.org.

If you would like to take advantage of the Spoleto experience but are a little tight on cash, you might want to check out the events of Piccolo Spoleto. Launched in 1979, Piccolo Spoleto was designed to offer the Spoleto experience to everyone regardless of their economic, social or physical circumstance.

Whatever you decide to do, just get out there and enjoy Charleston!

Nineteen years ago this month, Hurricane Hugo blew into Charleston. With the highest winds sustained at an estimated 138 mph it devastated the barrier islands in South Carolina and uprooted 70% of the trees in the Francis Marion Forest. Hugo was one of the costliest hurricanes in US history until 1992 when Andrew hit, followed by Katrina in 2005.
Although we hope for a quiet season and that Hanna will just be a bad rainstorm, the possibility of a hurricane is a fact and we all need to be prepared.

SCDHEC suggests the following items to have on hand in case there is a threat of a storm: Cash or travelers checks, spare batteries, flashlights, a battery powered radio, a week’s supply of water. These were among some of the items recommended for an emergency supply kit. If you would like a full list you can get it from the following website: scdhec

After living here in Charleston for a little over eleven years, there is one thing about NYC that I still miss and that is sitting in box seats at Yankee Stadium to see my New York Yankees play. Although cable television provides the opportunity to see them play, there is nothing like being in the Bronx at the stadium to enjoy a game. However, I don’t miss them as much because right here in Charleston, we have our very own team the Charleston RiverDogs. The Charleston RiverDogs are a Class-A affiliate of the New York club. There is nothing like spending a Friday night at the Joe Riley Stadium with a cold beer and a hotdog to watch the game. This is a great place for people of all ages to have fun. Every night of the week has a theme. For instance, Monday nights the RiverDogs will feature a different charitable organization that allows them the opportunity to raise funds. Sunday afternoons, “Family Sundays” allow you to play catch on the field before the game, run the bases and get players’ autographs. My favorite is Friday Fireworks & Red Shirt Fridays. If you support our troops by wearing a red shirt to the game you will receive a $1 discount off the price of your ticket. After the game, there is an explosive display of fireworks for everyone to enjoy. If you haven’t had the pleasure of catching a game, I recommend that you do. You’re guaranteed a good time. For more information go to www.riverdogs.com
